In order to have a effective persoanl brand you have to ask af few questions: Who are you? Or more accurately, how do you want people to think of you?

These are not simple questions, but they’re essential ones for anybody who’s working in network marketing or sales. If you can’t answer them, you’re going to have difficulty attracting clients.

The answers to those questions point to something that you may not have thought about: your personal brand.

Personal branding is the art of developing a consistent framework to present yourself. Nike has “Just Do It.” That’s a corporate brand but it also ends up being a way for the people who buy Nike products to identify with the company. If you look at Nike’s ads and social media posts, you can see that their brand drives everything they do.

Why Does Having a Personal Brand Matter?

If you’re making your money in MLM or affiliate marketing, you might be wondering why you need a personal brand. After all, the people who buy the products you market are interested in the products – right?

The answer is more nuanced than you might think. When you’re the one marketing the product, your credibility plays a key role in whether people buy the product or move on. If people don’t trust you or understand your point of view, they’re unlikely to take your word for the quality of a product.

Let’s look at some branding statistics that illustrate why personal branding is a must:

  • It takes only 10 seconds for people to form an impression of a brand
  • 64% of brand relationships are driven by shared values
  • Having a signature color for your brand increases recognition by 80%
  • 59% of customers prefer buying from familiar brands
  • A single loyal customer is worth 10 times as much as a new customer

The people who buy from you want to understand who you are, what your values are, and what makes your opinion one that’s worth listening to.

If people trust you because you have built a dynamic personal brand, they’ll be more likely to listen to what you say and buy the products you’re selling.

Personal Branding Questions to Ask Yourself

Building a personal brand requires doing some work to figure out the best way to present yourself to the world. It all starts with introspection – asking yourself some key questions to get at the heart of who you are.

  • What are the things that make you unique? Identifying the qualities and characteristics that set you apart from other people is an important step in personal branding. If you have difficulty, consider asking your friends or family members what your unique qualities are.

  • How do you want people to think of you? This might sound like a repeat of the above question, but it’s not. Your friends may see you as funny and sarcastic, but that doesn’t mean you want potential customers to see you that way. Ask yourself how you want the people in your target audience to view you.

  • Who is in your target audience? It may be helpful to develop a customer avatar to help you define your audience. Are you targeting stay-at-home moms? Fitness enthusiasts? Understanding your target audience will help you get a handle on the brand characteristics that are most important to them.

  • What are your core values? A lot of consumers choose brands that share their values. Identifying your core values and incorporating them into your personal brand can help you connect with the people who share your values.

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can begin to build a dynamic personal brand.

How to Build Your Magnetic Brand

You know who you are, who your audience is, and how you want your audience to perceive you. Now it’s time to put the elements of your personal brand in place.

Signature Colors and Logos

Visual reminders of your brand are a must. People encounter dozens of brands online every day. You need to be memorable – and that’s easy to do with a smart logo and some signature colors.

A well-designed logo is instantly recognizable. The Nike swoosh and the Target bullseye are two well-known examples.

Your logo should represent who you are and what you do. It should be simple and recognizable – and tell potential customers something about who you are.

Logo design is a complex topic, but every element of your logo – including the colors, shapes, and fonts you choose – should speak to your personal brand.

Brand Personality

Your brand personality is something you may not have thought about. Ask yourself how people would describe your brand if your brand were a person. Would it be lofty? Down-to-earth? Funny? Serious?

Choose no more than three or four personality traits for your brand and be sure to represent those traits consistently. Everything on your website, social media accounts, emails, and ads should demonstrate your brand personality.

Brand Voice

Your brand voice is the tone you use in your content. Whether you’re writing blog posts, shooting a video webinar, or hosting a podcast, your brand voice must be consistent and in line with your brand personality and values.

It’s a must to remember your audience. If you’re speaking to an audience of gurus, you should write on a different level than you would if you were speaking to newbies.

Your brand personality should shine in the voice you use. If your brand personality is humorous and down-to-earth, then you should use language that embodies those characteristics.

Brand Values

Finally, incorporate your brand values into your personal brand. That may mean choosing content to share that supports your values. It may mean getting involved in community activities or partnering with a charity. It could mean choosing products to market that match your values.

The key is consistency. Consumers want the brands they buy from to be predictable and to stick to their word. If one of your values is conservation, for example, then your branding should reflect that.

Personal branding is the key to marketing success…

Ultimately, you are the one who’s working to attract an audience and build a business. It’s not enough to rely on the branding of the products you sell. Your personal brand is what will attract new customers – and keep them coming back to you in the future.

"As an introvert entrepreneur I don't particularly enjoy chasing strangers online, networking events, talking about myself on social media or anything else you can think of that involves selling! But, because I learned how to market online the right way, I don't have to do those things."
