Being an introvert doesn’t mean that you can’t attract an audience online – any more than it means you can’t succeed as an introvert entrepreneur.

In fact, you can build a thriving online audience as an introvert without resorting to methods that feel uncomfortable or unnatural to you.

Doing business online is a benefit for introverts because many of the qualities that make us who we are also help us to connect with our audiences on a deep and meaningful level.

In other words, introversion is a big plus when it comes to building an audience!

Don’t believe me? I’ll prove it to you! =)

Let’s look at some of the introvert traits that can help you connect with your target audience online.

Listening to Your Audience

The terms “listening” and “online marketing” might not seem to have much in common, but they do. The mistake a lot of companies make is being too focused on themselves and not enough on what their audience wants.

That’s not what introverts do.

We’re fantastic listeners! That’s our superpower!

And, it turns out that being a good listener is one of the best ways to forge a meaningful connection with people online.

Here’s what you can do to put your super listening skills to work:

  • Follow industry publications and thought leaders and read what they have to say – and what their followers say in response
  • Give thoughtful and relevant responses to people who comment on your blog posts and social media posts
  • Ask your existing followers what they want to know and then answer their questions

A lot of online entrepreneurs don’t listen, and you can set yourself and your brand apart from your competitors by being someone who does.

Empathize with People

Introverts are known for being compassionate and empathetic people. You can attract an audience – and encourage them to be engaged – if you show them that you truly care about them and their problems.

Emotional marketing is something that introverts can use to their advantage. While some marketers focus on trying to elicit emotions from their followers, an introvert can tap into the emotions that their audience members – and potential audience members – already feel!

Empathizing with the difficulties and emotions that might make people search for you online can help you connect with them immediately and on a deep level. Many of us search for practical answers but respond to the people who seem to genuinely understand what we’re going through and care about helping us.

In other words, relationship marketing is introvert marketing.

Use Details to Build Your Authority

Because introverts are watchers and listeners, they also tend to be deep thinkers. And the thinking you do can help you to build authority with your online audience.

When people search for a product or service online, they do it because they need help. They’re looking for someone with extensive knowledge of a topic – someone who knows more than they do and is willing to share their knowledge.

That’s you!

A lot of introverts love to read and think deeply about problems.

They may not speak about an issue until they’ve got a strong knowledge base – and that makes them ideally suited to provide guidance to people online.

You can use your attention to detail as a way of attracting an audience by:

  • Spending your alone time watching training videos and reading publications relevant to the work you do.
  • Finding ways to combine what you’ve learned into new ideas and solutions for your target audience
  • Crafting content that you can then share with your online followers.

You might wonder if people will notice your authority – but don’t worry about it, they will! It will be evident in the quality and depth of the content you share.

Be Consistent and Driven

Extroverts and ambiverts can sometimes get distracted by outside influences. They may focus on what other people think instead of keeping their heads down and working toward a goal.

That’s not the case for introverts. In fact, you can use your tendency to look inward to help you connect with your audience.

One of the most important things to help you build an audience is consistency. Posting regularly (and predictably) helps your audience know what to expect from you. It also makes it more likely that the people who aren’t following you (yet) will be able to find you, since you’ll be posting new content all the time.

Try using social media scheduling software to stay on track. That way, you can:

  • Create posts on your own schedule
  • Schedule them to “go live” at the best times for your business
  • Be sure you have the emotional and mental reserves needed to respond to comments and requests

Your ability to focus on what’s important is something that will ensure that your audience can find you online – and that they’ll stay engaged once they follow you.

Create the Content You Love

There are many kinds of online content you can use to build an audience and keep them engaged going forward.

As an introvert, you know that you need time to recharge – and that you’ll feel better if you respect your needs.

One way to make the most of your downtime is to spend your uptime creating content you love. Maybe you love to write and get energy from creating written content that engages your readers. Perhaps you’re a graphic design whiz.

The key is to ask yourself:

  • What kind of content do I love to create?
  • What part of the content creation process energizes me?

Once you’ve identified the kinds of content you love to create, you can revamp your content creation schedule to allow you to do more of what you love.

The creative energy you feel around, say, designing an infographic or taking photographs, will translate into a passion that your audience will feel and appreciate.

The bottom line is that being an introvert can be an audience-attracting superpower.

By listening to your audience and your own needs, you can connect with the people who follow you on a deep, meaningful level – and that will allow you to grow your business and find the success you deserve.

"As an introvert entrepreneur I don't particularly enjoy chasing strangers online, networking events, talking about myself on social media or anything else you can think of that involves selling! But, because I learned how to market online the right way, I don't have to do those things."
